Coastal Carrier Feeds Families in Eastern North Carolina over Thanksgiving

December 7, 2020

Across our entire network, movers, partners, and individuals have all stepped up to fight the growing hunger crisis in this country. Coastal Carrier Moving & Storage held not 1 but 2 food drives in 2020.

The first took place in May and brought in 500 lbs of food (417 meals) which was donated to the Help Center of Federal Point, a food bank in Carolina Beach, North Carolina near Wilmington.

Their second food drive, a Thanksgiving Food Drive, was even bigger. Held in the parking lot of Henry’s Restaurant in Wilmington, NC, residents attempted to fill one of their trucks full of food. Coastal Carrier sure got close by collecting over 900 pounds of food (750 meals). They transported the food themselves to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina - Greenville Branch.

Eastern North Carolina is one of the worst parts of the country for food insecurity. On average, 1 in 6 and sometimes even 1 in 5 people are going hungry along the eastern seaboard.

Thanks to Coastal Carrier’s efforts, a few more people had something to eat over the holidays. Do you want to help out? Host a food drive in your area or sign up for our mover network

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
