CHPA Volunteers Provide 3,000 Meals for Texans Facing Hunger

May 3, 2017

This past week, Move For Hunger was once again honored to join the group at the Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) conference in Austin, Texas. The conference lasted two days and began with a volunteer activity at the Central Texas Food Bank. For a few hours, dedicated CHPA members (and staff) from Dwellworks, Furniture Options, Oakwood Worldwide, Azuma Leasing, Urban Corporate Housing, ALE Solutions, CWS Corporate Housing, Apartment & Relocation Center, Execustay, Southern Furniture Leasing and Corporate Housing Associates volunteered their time and energy to help those in need in the Lone Star state.

Members were put to work sorting through bins of bread, pastries, rice and beans, pet food and non-food items that have been donated to the facility. Also, a few lucky volunteers worked in the kitchen prepping fresh meals by peeling carrots and chopping onions. In all, this dedicated group sorted through 1,350 pounds of bread and pastries and 2,466 pounds of rice and beans, generating 3,180 meals for those in need!

The Central Texas Food Bank serves over 46,000 clients weekly and provides food for 250 pantries in 21 counties in the area. With a brand new facility and larger refrigerated and frozen section, the bank is providing more fresh, healthy options to those needing help. There are over 4.3 million Texas residents that require assistance putting food on the table, with over 23% of those in need being children.

It's because of dedicated volunteers like our friends at CHPA that enable our food banks to help those in need. Thank you for you support -- we'll see you at the next conference!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
