CHPA - Turning Miles Into Meals, Corporate Housing Style

October 28, 2016

The Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) is among our most supportive organizations. By recognizing Move For Hunger as their official charity, the partnership has enabled us to fight hunger and food waste in another aspect of the relocation industry. In the last two years, members from CHPA have collected and donated more than 7,800 pounds of food to food banks across the country -- that enough food for more than 6,500 meals!

This November, members of CHPA continue their amazing support by turning their miles into meals the Indianapolis Monumental 5K. Check out the awesome CHPA staff members who are dedicated to fighting hunger and food waste, one mile at a time.

chparunnersteammoveforhungerraceshirtMary Ann Passi - Chief Executive Officer

Alleviating hunger is something Mary Ann is passionate about. Running...not so much. Since she walks only a few steps faster than she runs, the 5K is perfect for her self-described "lack of" speed. As a fast walker, this shorter distance race gives her the opportunity to make a big difference with a few miles and a few more meals. She’s proud to be part of the CHPA team for the Indianapolis Monumental 5K.

Christine Saricos - Director of Education and Meetings

A native of Indianapolis, this year’s Monumental 5K will be Christine’s very first race! An experienced runner, she enjoys jogging around her neighborhood to blow off steam and stay active. Christine became aware of Move For Hunger through her role at CHPA, where serves as the Director of Meetings & Education. Since then, she has become heavily involved with Move For Hunger by assisting with multiple events over the last couple years and facilitating the growth of our corporate housing program.

amanda-cook_chpaAmanda Cook - Former Director of Membership and Marketing

Amanda finished her first full marathon in 2015 at this very same race and is honored to participate in the 2016 Indianapolis Monumental 5K as part of CHPA’s Move For Hunger team. She feels like she’s not a “real runner” unless she does another marathon, so she’ll be running in the 2017 Carmel Marathon. Amanda is the Marketing Manager for the JLL Indianapolis office. Her connection with CHPA allowed her to get involved with Move For Hunger by volunteering at food banks and encouraging the corporate housing industry to help fight hunger and food waste in their own backyards.

ryn-jarrett-chpaRyn Jarrett - VP of Sales and Marketing, Corporate Housing Systems

Ryn is a retired college athlete that is passionate about many things and her industry is just one of them. She’s an active CHPA volunteer so it was a given that she’d join the Move For Hunger team at the Monumental race. Helping feed people and alleviate hunger in her community is a bonus!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT CHPA - HAVE A GREAT RACE!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
