As BHHS First Realty joined the fight against hunger with a bang! As a Move For Hunger partner since May, BHHS First Realty hosted a successful office food drive in Wes Des Moines, Iowa during the month of July. The drive collected food for the 300,000 people in Iowa who are at risk for hunger.

With high aspirations, BHHS First Realty announced, that if they met a goal of 500 pounds of food collected, they would host a BBQ for residents. With the incentiveset, they began collection. When the month concluded, BHHS First Realty far exceeded their goal. They collected 640 pounds of non-perishable food. This amounts to 533 meals that will go to the people of Iowa. They celebrated with a well-deserved BBQ at the end of July.

Prairie Van and Storage  a local agent of Atlas Van lines, picked up the donations and delivered them to the Lutheran Church of Hope West Des Moines. This saved the church the money for fuel, trucks, and insurance that would go to transporting the food on their own. Company collaboration facilitated a successful donation to fight hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
