Atlantic Relocation Systems Named 2016 Mover of the Year

March 9, 2017

ATLANTA, GAAtlantic Relocation Systems, an Atlas Van Lines agent with 13 locations across the United States, has been named “Mover of the Year” by the national non-profit organization, Move For Hunger, for their commitment to fighting hunger in their community. The award was presented on February 28 at the American Moving & Storage Association’s 2017 Education Conference and Expo in Palm Springs, CA.

“Atlantic Relocation Systems has always been a reliable partner in our fight to end hunger and reduce food waste, but what they were able to accomplish in 2016 was remarkable,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “Last year, their 13 locations donated nearly 40,000 pounds of food combined – that’s enough to provide more than 33,000 meals to their neighbors in need.”

Nearly 50 million Americans, including 1 in 5 children, are food insecure – meaning they lack reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Meanwhile, 40% of all the food produced in the U.S. each year ends up in a landfill or is left to rot in a field. Atlantic Relocation Systems recognized the tragedy of so much food going to waste when so many people don’t have enough to eat, and joined Move For Hunger in 2013 to help provide meals to their neighbors in need.

People tend to throw a lot of things away when they move, including perfectly good food. As part of Move For Hunger’s national network of relocation professionals, Atlantic Relocation Systems provides their customers with the opportunity to donate unopened, non-perishable food during the moving process. Atlantic Relocation Systems volunteers to deliver the donations to the local food bank/pantry, free of charge. As an added service, Atlantic Relocation Systems also generously donates their time, services, and supplies to neighbors who are organizing food drives in the community.

Since joining Move For Hunger in 2013, Atlantic Relocation Systems’ 13 branches have combined to collect more than 74,000 pounds of food – nearly 62,000 meals.

In light of their exemplary work fighting hunger and spreading awareness about food insecurity in their community, Move For Hunger has proudly recognized Atlantic Relocation Systems as the 2016 Mover of the Year.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
