Atlanta Moving Company Collects 700+ Lbs of Food For Area Veterans

January 11, 2017

Atlanta, GA -- Atlantic Relocation Systems of Atlanta, an Atlas agent, demonstrated their patriotism and charitable benevolence this holiday season by holding a holiday food drive to benefit local veterans. Through the company's food collection efforts, they were able to collect more than 700 pounds of food -- that's nearly 600 meals! -- for the Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) of Atlanta. The VEO provides housing, meals, counseling, training, and provides medical and dental attention to displaced military veterans and their families.

Knowing that they needed dedicated members of the community in order to collect as much food as possible, Mary Fowler of Atlantic Relocation Systems reached out the the Atlanta Area Senior Citizen Network Niche (ASCNN). She spoke at their monthly meeting in November, inspiring the network to join Atlantic Relocation Systems in their quest to help feed their local veterans. Fowler handed out more than 100 food collection bags at the meeting and beseeched the group to  help her collect as many donations as possible. To her delight, the group returned with more than 500 pounds of food at their meeting the following month!

In addition to the food from ASCNN, Atlantic Relocation Systems collected an additional 3 boxes of food, bringing their grand total to nearly 750 lbs for the VEO!!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
