April 2015 Mover of the Month

May 26, 2015

Move For Hunger likes to recognize a company each month that stands out in their efforts to stop hunger. For April, Move For Hunger’s Mover of the Month is Reebie Storage & Moving of Naperville, Illinois. Reebie Storage & Moving, an agent of Allied Van Lines has been a partner of Move For Hunger since 2013. Reebie Storage & Moving was founded in 1880 and is now one of the best-known and respected moving and storage companies in Chicago. Reebie believes in giving back to the community; for the benefit of their neighbors, they have donated significant time and resources.

To date, Reebie goes above and beyond to ensure that people donate their unwanted food when they move. To date, they have collected over 176,000 pounds of food, delivering more than 147,000 meals to the Chicago area.

Reebie Storage & Moving does more than just transporting food to food banks. They pick up unopened, non-perishable food items from their customers and the community year-round, no matter the weather conditions.

While many people believe that hunger is a problem in other countries, it is also a big issue in our own backyards. 1 in 6 Americans don’t have enough to eat, including nearly 16 million children. Reebie Storage & Moving is helping alleviate the pressure hunger puts on not only Americans, but more specifically the 1,755,180 people in Illinois that do not know where they will find their next meal.

They also helped tornado victims in Fairdale, Illinois along with the Naperville Chamber of Commerce. They delivered food and everyday necessities, including cleaning products, baby supplies, gift cards, pet food, and much more.

It is obvious that Reebie Storage & Moving are more than deserving of this award. Hopefully now more attention will be brought to all the good they are doing for their community. There is no doubt they will keep up the good work in the future!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
