1 Million Pounds and Counting: Nelson Westerberg's Hunger-Fighting Journey

October 17, 2023

Nelson Westerberg has successfully delivered one million pounds of food to help fight hunger! Since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2012, Nelson Westerberg has continuously shown their dedication to the cause. Their impact has been nothing short of remarkable, as the 1 million pounds of food is the equivalent to over 830,000 meals distributed from their various locations nationwide.

Based in Illinois, Nelson Westerberg has expanded its reach to four other states: California, New Jersey, Georgia, and Texas. Each of these locations has played an active role in the ongoing battle against hunger.

Over the years, all of Nelson Westerberg’s locations have been an impressive and crucial ally in our ongoing fight against hunger. In April of 2023, the Georgia branch swiftly stepped in to support Second Helpings - Atlanta, a food rescue organization.  They partnered with HelloFresh to provide weekly food donations, showing that they're not only movers but shakers too! So far this year, they’ve delivered nearly 250,000 meals to food insecure Georgians

In 2022, Nelson Westerberg of Illinois aided the local April Foods Day- a local Chicago-based food drive. They delivered 16,000 liters of water in order to aid and support the community! Absolute rockstars!

Their commitment didn't go unnoticed, and in 2021, Nelson Westerberg was named "Partner of the Year." Their contribution of over 80,000 pounds of food, equivalent to more than 67,000 meals, earned them this well-deserved recognition.

Nelson Westerberg exemplifies the spirit of our mission, and their dedication to fighting hunger has made an immeasurable difference.
- Adam Lowy, Founder and Executive Director of Move For Hunger

Nelson Westerberg and its team have consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication in the fight against hunger. We are deeply honored to have them as a part of our team and extend our heartfelt congratulations on reaching the remarkable milestone of one million pounds of food delivered.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
