Nelson Westerberg of Georgia Steps up to the Plate to Impact Thousands of Food Insecure Georgians, Awarding them Mover of the Month

May 12, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger highlights a moving company that has gone above and beyond with their work to fight against hunger. For April, we’re excited to announce that Nelson Westerberg of Georgia is our Mover of the Month!

Starting in early April, Nelson Westerberg of Georgia volunteered to help with weekly food donations from HelloFresh, delivering tractor loads of nutritious foods including apples, asparagus, limes, greens, onions, mushrooms, peppers, potatoes, and more.

In just 6 weeks, more than 74,000 lbs of fresh food donations have been delivered to the communities who need it most, providing more than 61,000 meals to Georgians. And they aren’t stopping there!

“The team at Nelson Westerberg has been so willing to contribute their time in such a selfless manner. Each driver that has been involved has felt such a sense of excitement at this opportunity.”
- Curt Atkins, Branch Manager

Atkins continues with a quote from one of the drivers, “I have been blessed in my life. Now it’s time to give back as much as I can”.

Nelson Westerberg has been an essential Move For Hunger partner since 2012, and their combined locations nationwide have delivered over 600,000 meals. To learn more about their weekly food rescues, check out this blog!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
