Apex Moving + Storage and Local Elementary School Deliver Nearly 1,000 LBS. of Food

April 2, 2018

You're never too young to help fight hunger. Reeves-Rogers Elementary School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee proved it by hosting a week-long food drive in March. The school partnered with Apex Moving + Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, after hearing about food drives they helped out with at other schools in the neighborhood.

More than 950 lbs. of non-perishable food was donated -- that's enough to provide 800 meals to their neighbors in need! Apex Moving + Storage volunteered to pick up and deliver all of the donations to The Journey Home.

The students were rewarded with a pizza and ice cream party and the teachers from the top 3 classrooms received gift cards to use for supplies. Sounds like a win-win for everyone involved!

Apex Moving + Storage has been helping students at several local schools to help fight hunger over the past few months. In December the crew partnered with Barfield Elementary School and collected 3,520 lbs. of food, which is the equivalent of 2,900 meals! Not too far away in Antioch, Apex Moving + Storage teamed up with Brown's Chapel Elementary and LaVergne Primary School to host  Thanksgiving food drives, which brought in 7,000 lbs. of food -- enough to provide 5,800 meals!

More than 35,000 people in Rutherford County, Tennessee are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to Reeves-Rogers Elementary School and to the team at Apex Moving + Storage for working together to make a difference.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
