Jersey Shore Roller Girls Host Food Drive at Season Opener

July 17, 2017

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls hosted a food drive during their season-opener at Winding River Skating Center in Toms River on May 13. Fans were asked to donate cans to the team they were rooting for. Anyone who made a donation received a free concession or a free raffle ticket for half-time games. More than 80 pounds of food was collected, enough to provide 65 meals!

Our friends at Jersey Shore Moving & Storage, a National Van Lines agent, volunteered to deliver all of the donations to Fulfill

More than 114,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties are facing food insecurity.

"Many of our skaters were born and raised there, and have continued their adult lives in the area," said Kerry Myers. "We have a desire to serve the community that has served us so well by giving us both a permanent and a skating home. We know the struggle of hunger that is faced by many in this area, and we wanted to do something to help. That's why we combined the two things we love most - roller derby and helping our community - and decided to host a food drive at our first home game this year."

Thank you to the Jersey Shore Roller Girls for skating that extra stride to fight hunger in our community!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
