A Guide to Donating Stock For Charity

December 4, 2024

When you give to an organization you’re passionate about, you’re making a real change and directly helping those in need. Monetary donations help fund missions so nonprofits can keep serving people and communities in need. When you give to Move For Hunger, your gift supports our hunger relief and food recovery efforts, so we can put food on the plates of those who need it the most.

Every day more than 47 million Americans face hunger, including 1 in 5 children. Meanwhile, 38% of the food produced in the United States every year is wasted. In 2009 we started mobilizing our transport network to help reduce food waste and fight hunger.

There are a number of ways to make a one-time or monthly donation, but one way you may have not considered is giving with a stock donation. Instead of selling your investments and donating the after-tax cash proceeds, donate stock directly and increase your gift and tax deductions. Here's a guide to donating with stock:

Why Donate With Stock?

When you donate with stock you can give more to the organizations you care about without out-of-pocket expenses. Some individuals and households may be able to take advantage of IRS tax provisions to claim a charitable tax deduction for the total, fair market value of the securities, and you may avoid paying capital gains tax on the transfer.

What Stock Can I Donate?

These donations can include publicly traded stock, bonds, or mutual fund shares, to Move For Hunger, Inc. Stock donations can also be used to endow an annual gift or establish a planned gift and become a Legacy Society Member.

What Are Appreciated Securities?

Appreciated securities are investments that are worth more now than they were when purchased.

When Is The Best Time To Donate?

A gift of stock made before December 31 of a calendar year may reduce your tax burden for the
year you give. Your financial advisor can explain the possible tax benefits depending on whether the stock has gained or lost value since you acquired it.

Making a stock donation only takes a few steps and makes a big impact in our fight against hunger.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
