Windsor Communities Kick-Off Partnership and the Summer with a Pair of Food Drives!

July 9, 2018

This past June, two Windsor Communities in Massachusetts had a fantastic kick-off to summer as they hosted exciting events for their residents and fought hunger at the same time! Windsor at Cambridge Park hosted a summer barbeque for their residents, while Windsor at Oak Grove held a pool party for 100+ residents. Both properties encouraged people to come out and support their new partnership with Move For Hunger.

What made these summer kick-off events special was that each Windsor Community tied a food drive into the event, motivating residents to bring non-perishable food items that could later be donated to The Greater Boston Food Bank. It's great to see apartment communities like this tie the fight against hunger into events that they host. Not only did Windsor Communities collect donations for the food bank, but they also helped spread the word about hunger within the local community through their initiative.

A huge thank you goes out to Windsor Communities for hosting these events, and to our friends at Gentle Giant Moving Company, who picked up and delivered the donations to The Greater Boston Food Bank. Nearly 200 pounds of food were collected in total, which will provide 160 meals for their neighbors in need! Donations like this go a long way in the Boston area, where 1 in 11 people struggle with food insecurity on a daily basis.

People throw out a lot of "stuff" when they move, and unfortunately, a lot of that "stuff" is perfectly good food that could be given to families in need. Move For Hunger is teaming up with apartment communities all across the nation to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to donate food when they move.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
