Windsor at Oak Grove Holds 3rd Food Drive of 2018

November 29, 2018

First they helped fight summer hunger. Then, they held a Back to School food drive to collect kid friendly snacks for children in their community. And earlier this month, Windsor at Oak Grove hosted a Thanksgiving food drive to provide holiday meals for their neighbors in need.

From November 5-24, the staff and residents of the Melrose, MA apartment community were encouraged to donate stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables/gravy, cranberry sauce, and other Thanksgiving-themed items to help set the table for food insecure families in the Boston area. A grand total of 300 lbs. of food was collected, which is enough to provide 250 meals!

Our partners from CORT of Boston volunteered to pick up all of the donations and delivered them to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

More than 463,000 people in eastern Massachusetts are food insecure, including 1 in 9 children. Thank you to everyone from Windsor at Oak Grove and CORT of Boston for doing your part to fight hunger during the holidays.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
