More than $27,000 raised at the Vanliner Open

April 9, 2019

We held our first-ever mini golf fundraising tournament, the Vanliner Open, at the American Moving & Storage Association’s annual convention from March 24-26 in Houston, TX. This event raised more than $27,000 to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs

AMSA2019Conference_MiniGolfFundraiser (127).JPGThe Vanliner Open featured a course built with the use of non-perishable food items, which were later donated to the Houston Food Bank. This unique course was set up right outside of the main exhibition hall, drawing in many players! There were no costs to participate, but we definitely kept score in order to determine our winners! Scott Buska of Acme Car Shipping was the winner of the tournament, and he took home a brand new Odyssey Golf putter!  n second place was Helen Miracle, also of Acme Car Shipping, who received a TaylorMade putter. Thank you to CarsArrive, our Official Prize Sponsor, for donating both putters.

A very special thank you to our Title Sponsor Vanliner Insurance Company! Thank you to our Hole Sponsors: Arrow Truck Sales, CSNS Relocation Services, Custom Movers Services, Dewitt Move Worldwide, Kentucky Trailer, Penske, Permit Puller, and Relo Trans Auto Relocation. We would also like to thank Javier Sierra and Atlantic Relocation Systems of Houston for delivering 350 lbs. of non-perishable food used for the course to the Houston Food Bank, providing almost 300 meals to food insecure people in the Houston area.

More than 40 million people, including 1 in 6 children, are facing food insecurity in the U.S. It is through the generous donations of our all our sponsors, partners, and volunteers, that Move For Hunger is able to continue our fight to end hunger nationwide!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
