U.S. Storage Centers Holds Thanksgiving Food Drive

January 3, 2020

Between October 28 and November 18, 2019, our partners from U.S. Storage Centers held a Thanksgiving Food Drive at 14 of their locations nationwide. Together, they collected a total of 784 lbs. of food, which will provide more than 650 meals to their neighbors in need!

U.S. Storage Centers provided potential donors with a list of the most requested Thanksgiving non-perishable food items, including canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and instant potatoes. Although every branch made an impact, the Phoenix location led the way by collecting 252 lbs. of food, which will provide 200 meals to food insecure families in the Phoenix, AZ area! Our friends from Lifetime Moving & Storage volunteered to deliver all of those donations to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. The team in Carson, CA  came in second, collecting 122 lbs. of food, which will provide more than 100 meals to families in their community.

There are more than 40 million people facing food insecurity in the United States, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to our partners from U.S. Storage Centers for continuing to support our mission to fight hunger nationwide!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
