Traverse Area Association of Realtors Collects Nearly 700 LBS. of Food During Hunger Action Month

October 5, 2018

The Traverse Area Association of Realtors (TAAR) held their first annual Hunger Action Month Food Drive from September 24-28. The event took place at TAAR's office in Traverse City, as well as during the Michigan Realtors Convention at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. TAAR employees and attendees at the convention were asked to bring donations of non-perishable food, and they definitely delivered! Nearly 700 lbs. of food were collected between the two locations, which is enough to provide 580 meals. The crew from Morse Moving & Storage of Traverse City volunteered to pick up the donations from both locations and delivered them all to The Northwest Food Coalition.

Everyone involved with the event agreed that it was a rewarding experience.

"Being involved in this effort was very humbling," said Ursel Mayo, Michigan RRC (CRS) State President. "We at CRS/RRC are thankful for partnering with the Traverse Area Association and Move For Hunger organization for this very worthwhile endeavor. Definitely a 'win-win' situation for everyone!"

"No child should be hungry," added Beth Pressler, Associate Broker at Century 21 Town & Country of Grosse Point. "Every closed real estate transaction, residential or commercial, should be part of the Move for Hunger program."

And the donations they collected were exactly the type of food The Northwest Food Coalition was looking for.

"This was a very good food drive and the majority (of the donations) were protein foods which the pantries desperately need to be able to give a total meal," said Val Stone, Food Rescue Coordinator at The Northwest Food Coalition. "Thanks to everyone for all the effort and coordination."

There are more than 1.4 million facing hunger Michigan, including 1 in 7 children. We greatly appreciate the time and effort put in by everyone who generously contributed to this effort!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
