Tis the Season of Giving

December 13, 2016

The season of giving is officially here, but we've been feeling the holiday spirit for months. Witnessing amazing acts of altruism every day will do that to you. An outpouring of goodwill from people all across the United States and Canada has allowed us to collect over 360,000 pounds of food since October. We've welcomed dozens of new members/partners to the Move For Hunger family. And a few generous donations we received from our supporters will help us to continue our mission in the year ahead.

Food Drives

UniversityMovingAndStorage_FarmingtonHillsFoodDrive2016 (4).jpgOur events team and interns have been working nonstop to keep up with the flood of food drive requests we've received over the past 3 months. Since October 1, we've helped coordinate over 200 food drives, which brought in more than 330,000 pounds food. We've had the opportunity to get to know so many incredible food drive organizers, far too many to mention in this post, but here's a list of five of our favorite recent events.

Food Rescues

Our partners in the relocation industry have increasingly been volunteering their time and resources to collect leftover food from races and deliver them to local food banks. Since October, movers in our network have rescued nearly 44,000 pounds of bananas, energy bars, and bottled water from races in Brooklyn, Charlotte, Las Vegas, and Seattle.

New Members/Partners

Grants and Awards

We were fortunate to receive donations from the NBC Universal Foundation, Mazda Drive For Good and Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Cares that will help to support hunger relief and food waste reduction programs.

2017 promises to be our biggest year yet. Be sure to check our blog often to keep up on everything we're up to!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
