Ten Year Anniversary | 10 Members of Team Move For Hunger Who Went the Extra Mile

April 29, 2019

Team Move For Hunger hasn't been around for the entirety of the past decade, but the runners and walkers who have joined our fundraising team have certainly made up for lost time! Since 2014, 650 people from all across the United States have laced up their sneakers and pounded the pavement in 5Ks, marathons, and even ultramarathons, to help us reduce food waste and fight hunger. Together, they have raised nearly $370,000 to support our programs. Here's a look back at 10 of the altruistic athletes who have turned their miles into meals.

Jordan has represented Team Move For Hunger at a record seven races since 2014, most recently at the Country Sole Half Marathon in June of 2018! He made his debut with the team at the 2014 Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon, and faced his most difficult test at the Glacial Trail 50K in 2016. All combined, Jordan has raised more than $2,000 to support our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs!

In 2016, Larry Mercer decided to make his miles count throughout the year, and challenged himself to donate $3 for every mile he ran, calling it the “1,000 Mile Challenge.” Since then, Larry has run 3,582 miles and raised more than $11,000 to support Team Move For Hunger. We can't thank you enough, Larry!

In July of 2017, Lauren Castle raised $5,000 for Team Move For Hunger by walking in the San Francisco 1/2 marathon! In addition to being a Move For Hunger advocate, Lauren also been a board member of The Housing Industry Foundation — a non-profit, working to keep people in stable housing and/or to return people to stable housing — for 13 years.

Thomas Bailey from ReloTrans AutoTransport made his Team Move For Hunger debut at the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 1/2 marathon in 2018 and finished with an impressive time of 1:49! With his wife and two young children cheering him on in the rain, Thomas proved that the weather couldn't damper his dedication. And, by raising $2,025, he became one of our top fundraisers, as well!

Kerry D - Half Marathon.jpgKerry Duffy

Kerry Duffy has represented the Team at the New Jersey 1/2 Marathon 4 times! Move For Hunger first caught Kerry’s attention at the race expo and she was immediately impressed with our organization. After that, Kerry decided to make her steps count and committed to turning her miles into meals. She has raised thousands of dollars to support our cause, and we hope she will continue to be a member of the Team for years to come!

In 2016, National Van Lines COO Tim Helenthal participated in the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon along with his daughter, Lauren. Tim raised an astonishing $6,621 and still holds the title of Team Move For Hunger’s top fundraiser! In 2018, Tim recruited a team of 13 of his coworkers at National Van Lines, and together they raised $10,675 for our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs.

Andrew Rozzi is the Philadelphia Regional Manager for Gentle Giant Moving Company. In addition to being one of Move For Hunger’s biggest supporters, Andrew is also a runner, and he turned his miles into meals by raising more than $1,000 at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia 1/2 Marathon in 2015. He also represented Team Move For Hunger earlier that year with some of his Gentle Giant coworkers at the Rock ‘n’ Roll D.C. Marathon! Andrew first heard of Move For Hunger through industry contacts and instantly became involved. According to Andrew, “The model is perfect because it is easy and sustainable, and the benefits are tremendous."

Bill Paxton led a team of runners/walkers from Paxton Van Lines at last year's Rock 'n' Roll D.C. Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, and 5K. Our Executive Director, Adam Lowy, challenged Bill to join the Team at the Atlas Van Lines convention, and he called his bluff! Bill completed the half-marathon, and Team Paxton raised nearly $6,000 to support our programs.

Ben Ivory, Senior Vice President from our partners at Graebel, completed the 2018 Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 1/2 marathon with a smile on his face, despite the miserable weather that day. Ben raised $375 last year and is excited to recruit runners/walkers from Graebel's Denver and Seattle locations to turn their miles into meals at a race sometime soon.
