Teaming Up with the Hire A Helper Moving Labor Marketplace

September 13, 2016

This post was written by HireAHelper’s Editor, Alan Lopez.

Moving for good has taken on a whole new meaning.

When you think of how to combat hunger, one of the last things that might come to mind is to tap into a massive network of professional, local movers. Yet that’s exactly what Move for Hunger and HireAHelper have set out to do, with Move For Hunger announcing a partnership with the moving services specialists.

As denizens of Move for Hunger know, we link local movers with food banks, so that when a moving consumer cleans out their old place, all the non-perishables can go to a food bank instead of the trash.

Partnering with HireAHelper’s moving labor marketplace is a big step towards reaching more people who are moving and thus, more people in need than ever before. As far as win-win’s go, few will ever be as clear as this one, says Mike Glanz, CEO of HireAHelper.

“It just makes sense. We’ve overseen over 150,000 moves since we began the company, so we definitely have a vast network of movers to tap into.”

HireAHelper will make a donation to further the cause of eradicating hunger, with the door wide open for more collaborations to come.

Adds Glanz, “I’m pretty excited to see what we can achieve.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
