Team Move For Hunger Highlight - Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Superstars!

July 11, 2018

This month, Team Move For Hunger is once again traveling to the Windy City for the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 1/2 Marathon, 10K & 5K. This is our fifth time turning miles into meals in Chicago, with it being our fourth at this particular race. We are so excited about the awesome members on this years' team, it's full of longtime supporters, new additions and a bunch of amazing people dedicated to helping us fight hunger and food waste. Check out these Chicago superstars!

National Van Lines One of Move For Hunger's most vocal and involved partners, National Van Lines is no stranger to this event. RNRChicago2018_NationalVanLines-(4)-WEB.jpgIn 2016, National's COO Tim Helenthal participated in the half marathon along with his daughter, Lauren. Tim raised an astonishing $6,621 and still holds the title of Team Move For Hunger's top fundraiser! This year, Tim has recruited a team of 13 and is dedicated to raising $10,000 for our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs. National's "Move Out Hunger running team" have made their own race shirts just as their full-fridge brigade is devoted to stomping out hunger. Want to help them hit their goal? Check out their donation page here!

Suite Home Chicago Another repeat, the group from Suite Home Chicago is once again turning their miles into meals with the Team. A member of our Corporate Housing program since 2016, this awesome company has not only raised money and collected food, they graciously put our staff up in one of their furnished apartments when we visit the area. The family affair will be repeated this year, with owner Jennifer Breen accompanied by her children, Gabriela Bankova, Gabriela's husband, and a new smiling face, Matthew Tobel.

Team-Move-For-Hunger-Testimonial-Thomas-Bailey.jpgReloTrans Auto Relocation A newcomer to the Team, Thomas Bailey from ReloTrans Auto Relocation is making his debut on the course this year. Thomas met Executive Director Adam Lowy at the beginning back in 2009 and was instantly impressed with the organization. According to Thomas, "Although ReloTrans is a vehicle relocation company, we decided to join the Move For Hunger family and started supporting as soon as we could. Being able to fly the Move For Hunger flag on our website and some of our other promotional items is an absolute honor and a privilege." When asked by Adam to do the race, Thomas instantly accepted the challenge. He ran his first 5K about five years ago but thought any distance over 4-5 miles was too much. After training for weeks, Thomas feels great and is excited for race day, even exploring the option of a full marathon someday (depending on how the half goes of course). The energy and determination of participants in races like these are inspiring to Thomas and he's excited to get out there to turn his miles into meals with the Team, help him hit his goal by donating here!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
