Stewart Moving & Storage Recommits to Partnership With Move For Hunger

September 20, 2019

MIDLOTHIAN, VA – Stewart Moving & Storage and Move For Hunger have renewed their partnership to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the United States. As a member of the Move For Hunger network since 2016, and a proud partner of the hunger-relief organization for the past two years, Stewart Moving & Storage’s nine branches has provided more than 40,000 meals to people in the communities they serve.

People throw away a lot of things when they move, including food. Stewart Moving & Storage educates their customers about the issues of hunger and food waste and encourages them to donate their non-perishable food items when they move. Stewart Moving & Storage then delivers the donations to the local food bank or pantry, free of charge.

“More than 40 million Americans face hunger every day, but we are wasting 40% of the food in the United States each year,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “Stewart Moving & Storage is providing a sustainable solution to both problems. In addition to the donations, they are also teaching their customers how to be more conscious of hunger and food waste in their community going forward. We are proud to call them our partners.”

“We are so proud to partner with Move for Hunger in all the communities we serve,” said Jennifer Zeile, Director of Marketing & Business Development for Stewart Moving & Storage. “Hunger is such a preventable issue in the United States today; if everyone just chipped in and did their part. We’re committed to doing ours.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
