Smart Start Donates Nearly 1,000 LBS. of Food

February 7, 2020

Determined to help fight hunger during the holidays, Smart Start recently partnered with our friends from Alexander's Mobility Services of Dallas to hold a Season of Giving Food Drive.

From December 1-20, Smart Start asked its employees to bring in donations of non-perishable, holiday-themed food, such as canned soups/vegetables, instant potatoes, gravy, pasta, pie filling, and hot chocolate. The staff responed in a BIG WAY, bringing in 960 lbs. of food overall, which is enough to provide more than 800 meals to local familes in need. The crew from Alexander's Mobility Services volunteered to pick up all the donations and delivered them to the local food bank.

Smart Start is the worldwide leader in alcohol monitoring. They save thousands of lives each year with vehicle Ignition Interlock Devices for DUI prevention, as well as portable alcohol monitoring solutions for at-risk individuals.

“Smart Start is devoted to being a positive force in our community,” said Steve Luce, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “That’s why we’re happy to partner with an organization like Move For Hunger that shares our values. And we’re especially proud of our compassionate team members for working together to meet the challenge.”

Although this was the first time we've organized a food drive with Smart Start, we certainly hope it won't be the last!

Nearly 800,000 Texans in the greater Dallas area are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Thank you again to everyone at Smart Start and to the team from Alexander’s Mobility Services of Dallas for providing hundreds of meals to your neighbors in need!

Thinking of holding your own food drive? There's no better time to start than RIGHT NOW!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
