September 2018 Mover of the Month: Simply Moving

October 12, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Simply Moving has been named our Mover of the Month for September 2018!

Nothing makes us happier than seeing members of our network take initiative in the fight against hunger. This September, we experienced that excitement once again when Simply Moving came to us with the goal to get more involved in their community. The timing could not have been more perfect: it was Hunger Action Month, and The Food Bank of New York City was gearing up for a food drive.

On September 12, The Food Bank of New York City, Simply Moving, and Move For Hunger all teamed up to hold food drives at 5 Whole Foods Market locations in NYC, including Bryant Park, Columbus Circle, and more. Customers and members of the community were encouraged to donate peanut butter, tuna fish, pasta, and other nonperishable items to help their neighbors in need.

New York City is known for many things, and one of those is, unfortunately, the hectic driving! It’s tough to maneuver the city and find parking to begin with, and it’s only heightened when you’re driving a large moving truck. This didn’t stop Simply Moving from stepping in and picking up the donations from the food drive. They traveled to all 5 locations throughout the city, and we are so thankful that they accepted the challenge.

Stefan Marcali, the owner of Simply Moving, has a personal connection to the cause, and it's a big part of the reason why his company has committed to helping the communities they serve.

"Growing up, my family struggled financially," Marcali said. "I remember where I came from. I know how hard it can be for families and I want to make it easier for as many people as possible."

Marcali also noted that being part of Move For Hunger has had a positive impact on his staff and his customers.

"Giving is contagious," he said. "Our customers are always surprised, in a good way, that a program like this exists."

In addition to the award, Simply Moving will also be receiving a special gift from Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Simply Moving on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for your commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in New York City!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
