Riverbend Apartments Makes Timely Donation to Utah Food Bank

April 6, 2020

In these uncertain times, the generosity of individuals is a beacon of hope. Such was the case when Riverbend Apartment Homes, a member of our Multi-Family Program in Salt Lake City, called saying their residents had donated 84 lbs. of food. This donation provided 70 meals, at a time when donations are needed more than ever! We are also thankful for the generosity of our moving partners at Mountain States Moving & Storage, who volunteered to deliver all of the donations to the Utah Food Bank.

Food banks and pantries across the country are facing an unprecedented surge in the number of people they are servicing. The Utah Food Bank expects that they will feed over 4 million people this month alone. They have already taken steps to address the heightened demand by increasing the number of mobile pantries and made plans to distribute more than 10,000 bagged lunches for children per week.

Even in the face of crisis, many are still wondering how they can help Move For Hunger. The most effective thing you can do right now is make a donation to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs. If you'd like to organize a larger, peer-to-peer fundraising campaign, please email Margo Cianchetta and let her know what you have in mind. Members of the moving & relocation industry can mobilize their fleets to help local food banks meet the heightened demand they are already facing. Please email Raquel Yuhas and let her know if you have trucks, drivers, or crew members who may be able to deliver food to the food bank or its affiliate distribution centers.

More than 380,000 people in Utah are facing hunger, including 1 in 7 children. Food insecurity will continue to increase during the COVID-19 Pandemic, including thousands of children who rely on free school meal programs. We are grateful for the generosity of the residents of the Riverbend Apartment Homes and our moving partners at Mountain States Moving & Storage for doing their part during these difficult and uncertain times.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has left a massive economic impact and has drastically increased the need for emergency food assistance nationwide. Move For Hunger is actively searching for ways to meet the demand, but we need your help.

If you can, please consider making a donation to Move For Hunger. With your support, we'll be able to rapidly respond and mobilize our network in communities across the United States and Canada.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
