Move For Hunger to Host Meal Packing Event at AIM, Providing 2,400 Meals to LA Residents Affected by Wildfires

April 21, 2025

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (April 21, 2025) — Move For Hunger, a national nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger and reducing food waste, will host a one-of-a-kind meal kit packing event at the 2025 Apartment Innovation and Marketing (AIM) Conference on May 4, uniting multifamily professionals to make a tangible impact. Together with event sponsors, Updater, CORT, ALN, and AIM, participants will be invited to pack a meal kit for Los Angeles residents impacted by the devastating wildfires that swept through the region earlier this year.

The Los Angeles fires in January displaced more than 150,000 residents, and are costing hundreds of millions in wage loss for local employees and businesses. Months later, many are still living in hotels and rentals, and continue to need additional support to keep meals on the table. Those already facing housing and insecurity before the fires have been facing a steeper slope to recovery.

We’re proud to partner with leaders across the multifamily space who are stepping up to meet this urgent need. The wildfires have left many families displaced or struggling to access basic necessities—and food should never be one of those concerns. With the support of Updater, CORT, ALN, and AIM, we’re not just packing meals—we’re helping out our neighbors.
- Adam Lowy, Executive Director & Founder of Move For Hunger

As communities in Southern California continue to recover from the wildfires, the event serves as a powerful reminder of how the multifamily industry can come together to support those facing food insecurity during times of crisis. This hands-on volunteer opportunity will allow attendees to support local residents in a direct and meaningful way, and the meal kits will be delivered to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank directly after the event.

“This event is more than a conference activation — it’s a chance for our industry to rally together and give back to a community still reeling from disaster. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to give back during the AIM experience and show that innovation and impact can go hand in hand.”
- Dennis Cogbill, Managing Director of Joshua Tree Conference Group

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
