Playa Bowls Holds Thanksgiving Food Drive & Fundraiser at 64 Locations

December 17, 2019

Playa Bowls and Move For Hunger teamed up to hold a Thanksgiving Food Drive and Fundraiser from November 1-17. Sixty-four Playa Bowls locations encouraged their customers and community to bring in donations of non-perishable, Thanksgiving-themed food, such as stuffing, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, and canned vegetables to help provide holiday meals for their neighbors in need. Customers were also asked to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs nationwide by making a monetary donation at the register.

PlayaBowlsFoodDRiveFundraiser2019-PierVillage (1).JPGA grand total of 1,780 lbs. of food was donated, which provided more than 1,500 meals families facing hunger! Every location made an impact, but Playa Bowls of Princeton led the way by collecting 200 lbs. of food! Customers also donated a $6,362, which Playa Bowls then rounded up to a grand total of $7,500! This generous contribution will allow Move For Hunger to provide 18,750 additional meals!

Playa Bowls annually partners with a local charitable organizations to help those in need during the holiday season.

“Meeting everyone at Move For Hunger and hearing how passionate they were to help others really helped Playa Bowls to align our vision with theirs and to better educate customers on why their donations were so important and where they were going," said Erin McGregor, Marketing Manager at Playa Bowls. "The more we learned about Move For Hunger, the easier it was to spread the word to the community!”

Move For Hunger’s passion to end hunger encouraged the Playa Bowl staff, as well!

“Our staff really got into the partnership with Move For Hunger," McGregor said. "They encouraged customers to bring in non-perishable items to the store, and were excited to share when their boxes were filling up and they needed more room to collect items.”

The food drive would not have been possible, however, without the support of all of the moving companies who volunteered to pick up donations from the participating locations and deliver it to their local food banks. Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
