Pillar Properties Holds Shark Week Food Drives

August 21, 2019

Our partners at Pillar Properties helped us take a bite out of hunger this summer by holding Shark Week Food Drives at 3 of their locations in Seattle!

Shark Week is one of the biggest television events of the summer, but the staff at The Century, The Lyric, and The Maverick weren't content to be spectators this year! From July 28-August 3 residents at all 3 properties were asked to help provide the local food bank with a boatload of protein-rich canned tuna, salmon, or other non-perishable items. Together, they collected nearly 700 lbs. of food, which will provide 575 meals to their neighbors in need! Our friends from Reside by ABODA volunteered to pick up the donations from each property and delivered it all to the Northwest Harvest Food Bank.

The team from The Century really dove headfirst into this campaign. Not only did they collect the most food among the 3 properties, they also performed the greatest version of Baby Shark that we've ever seen.

With that kind of commitment, it's no surpise that The Century has now collected 1,514 lbs. of food all-time, which is more than any of the 1,300+ members of our Multi-Family Apartment Program.

There are nearly 849,000 people in Washington who are facing hunger each day, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to Pillar Properties, everyone at The Century, The Lyric, and The Maverick, and to the crew from Reside by ABODA working together to address this crisis.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
