Pediatric Speech and Language Center Hosts a Trick-or-Can! Food Drive

November 6, 2018

Here at Move For Hunger, we love to help make food drives as easy and as fun as possible for everyone involved. With the recent rollout of our Featured Campaigns and themes, this is possible all year long, especially in the fall. You can collect food in honor of Hunger Action Month (September), or swap out Halloween candy for non-perishable donations. Halloween surely is a time for spooks and scares, but not even ghouls and ghosts are as frightening as hunger. Knowing that there are many Colorado families in need, Pediatric Speech and Language Center decided to host a Trick or Can food drive this October.

Starting on the first day of the month and ending on Halloween, employees and clients of Pediatric Speech and Language Center were encouraged to donate food items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, canned vegetables, pasta and more. Together, they collected 100 pounds of food, which is enough to provide 83 meals for the local community. The food was then picked up by Pikes Peak Moving & Storage, who generously volunteered their time for the cause. The Wheaton agent delivered the donations to Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs.

There are more than 82,000 people in El Paso County who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. Thank you so much to Pediatric Speech and Language Center and Pikes Peak Moving & Storage Co. for teaming up and making this Trick or Can food drive possible. Your efforts will help change the lives of those in your local community, and we are so happy we could help!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
