Peace. Love. Food. | More than 53,000 LBS. of Non-Perishables Collected at 8th Annual FoodStock

November 6, 2017

It all began in 2010 when Maura Swisher, then a senior at St. John Vianney High School, needed to complete a community service project. Her family had long been volunteers at a local food pantry, so Maura decided to hold a food drive in their neighborhood. Their goal was to collect 2,000 lbs. of food.

More than 6,000 lbs. of food was collected and Maura and her family decided that this was something they wanted to continue doing every year.

On October 15, the Swishers held the eighth annual Foodstock at the Freehold Township Independent Firehouse #1. Attendees were asked to bring donations of non-perishable food and enjoy a picnic style dinner with free food and drinks. Live music is still a defining feature of the event, and this year’s lineup included a succession of local bands including Twice is Good, The Rock and Roll Chorus, Strumberry Pie, and the Eddie Testa Band.

Foodstock 2017 was by far the most successful to date: more than 53,000 lbs. of food was collected, which is enough to provide more than 44,000 mealsLowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton Worldwide agent, once again donated the use of their truck for the weekend and volunteered to deliver all of the donations to Lunch Break, which “provides food, clothing, life skills and fellowship to those in need in Monmouth County and beyond.”

Since 2010, more than 265,000 lbs. of food has been collected at Foodstock. Thank you to the Swishers for making this an annual tradition. It’s something we look forward to every October, and we hope to continue working together to fight hunger in Monmouth County for many years to come.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
