Here's a look back at some of the outstanding things Atlas Van Lines has done recently.

This past fall, the apples were unusually late at Barnard’s Orchard in Unionville, PA. Winter was quickly approaching, any apples left would go to waste. Stacey Louderback and her colleagues from Wayne Moving & Storage, have gleaned 3,100 lbs. of apples from the farm for the past 2 years. All of the rescued apples were delivered to the West Chester Food Cupboard.

Anchor Moving & Storage Rescues 5,000 LBS. of Food from Philadelphia Marathon

For the second year in a row, we pledged to have a mover who would volunteer to rescue any leftover food and beverages from the Philadelphia Marathon. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the company that had agreed to help had to cancel less than a week before the event. Fortunately, we had another partner in the area that we knew would jump at the opportunity. Thanks to the generosity of the team at Anchor Moving and Storage, more than 5,000 lbs. of oranges, snacks, pretzels, water, and sports drinks were recovered and delivered to Philabundance.

Paxton Van Lines Pulls Double Duty in D.C.

At this year's Rock ‘n’ Roll DC Marathon, 1/2 Marathon & 5K, our friends at Paxton Van Lines, volunteered their time, equipment, and staff to gather the immense amount of food leftover from the race. The company collected and delivered 10,600 lbs. of food to the Capital Area Food Bank. In addition to providing post-race food pick up, members of Paxton’s staff, friends, and family laced up their shoes and turned their miles into meals on the course, too! Led by half marathoner Bill Paxton, the team had participants running and walking every distance and raised nearly $6,000 for our hunger relief and food waste reduction programs.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
