Olympia Fields Resident's Community Food Drive Brings In 1,000+ LBS. of Food!

July 9, 2018

It’s officially summer and that means it’s time to get creative with food drive locations - on the boardwalk, at a pool club, or even at a barn in a local park!

An Olympia Fields, IL resident, Johnny Morris had the idea to host a community food drive at The Bradford Barn at Sergeant Means Park on Saturday, June 23. Members of the local community were encouraged to drop-off donations of non-perishable food items, such as rice, pasta, peanut butter, and canned fruits/vegetables to the barn throughout the day.

More than 1.4 million people, including 1 in 7 children, in Illinois are food insecure. By the evening, the Olympia Fields community had come together to collect 1,200 pounds of food, which will help combat hunger and provide 1,000 meals to families in need this summer.

Our friends at Copher Movers & Storage, a Wheaton agent, helped to deliver the donations to the Rich Township Food Pantry a branch of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Thank you so much to Johnny, Copher Movers & Storage, Inc and the entire Olympia Fields community for making this food drive a great success!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
