October 2017 Mover of the Month: Paramount Transportation Systems of New York

November 17, 2017

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Paramount Transportation Systems of New York is our Mover of the Month for October 2017!

Paramount Transportation Systems of New York joined the Move For Hunger network in the fall of 2013. Since then, they have delivered 3,200 lbs. of non-perishable food to the Hands of Hope Food Pantry in Edison, NJ. Nearly 1/3 of that total -- 975 lbs. -- was delivered in October.

Anthony Frangione is Paramount's Director of Corporate Services and just recently became the company's Move For Hunger coordinator.

"We make participating in the program a priority, " he said. "Paramount Transportation Systems believes it's important to give back. Our executive team is very supportive of our involvement in the program, and they were excited to hear we received this award."

Paramount Transportation Systems does a lot of international relocation, and most countries won't allow you to bring food across the border. Frangione said that his clients who are moving abroad are always happy to learn that Paramount offers to deliver the non-perishables to the local food pantry.

"Customers are very receptive to the program and they love that we participate," he said. "I hear, 'What a great idea!' and, 'That's so nice!' all the time. People respect that we are involved with Move For Hunger."

Paramount Transportation Systems of New York has always been a company we know we can count when we need assistance with a food drive in their area. Last month, for example, they donated boxes and volunteered to deliver the collections from H.B. Fuller's food drive. More than 300 lbs. of food were doanted during the month-long effort, and it would not have been possible without Paramount's Assistance. According to Jackie Godesky, President of the Hands of Hope Food Pantry, the donation could not have come at a better time.

“Twenty-five years ago, when we opened the food pantry, we served 10-15 families a month,” she said. “Today we are serving 400-500 families a month. Those numbers will increase dramatically during the months of November and December."

Frangione said that the award was validation for all of the time he and his staff have dedicated to Move For Hunger over the past four years.

"It's nice to know that we are seeing results."

In addition to the award, Paramount Transportation Systems of New York will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging, lunch for their entire staff, compliments of Montway Auto Transport, and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Paramount Transportation Systems of New York on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Garden State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
