November 2019 Mover of the Month: Slater Transfer & Storage

December 18, 2019

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Slater Transfer & Storage has been named our Mover of the Month for November 2019!

Slater Transfer & Storage has been a valued partner of Move For Hunger since 2012. All three Slater locations in the southwest are members of our network and together they have provided more than 37,000 meals for their neighbors in need.

The 11th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon was held on November 16-17. More than 3,000 runners shut down the Las Vegas strip to participate in this unique, evening race. Competitors are these events are always provided with food and water to help them refuel after crossing the finish line. Inevitably, there will always be more snacks and water than can be distributed that will end up discarded.

Move For Hunger had to act and since 2014, has been working with our network of moving partners to rescue more than 1.1 million lbs. of food and beverages from races around the country. The best part about having a network of nearly 1,000 moving companies is that there is usually someone willing to step up and help!

This time, Slater Transfer & Storage of Las Vegas answered the call, sending a truck to the site and collecting almost 45,000 lbs. of food, which they promptly delivered to Three Square Food Bank, providing more than 37,000 meals to food insecure residents of Clark County, NV.

There are more than 272,000 food insecure people in Clark County, including 1 in 8 children. Three Square, a Feeding America affiliate, serves four Southern Nevada counties: Clark, Nye, Lincoln, and Esmeralda. Three Square sources food, raise funds, and with their network of volunteers, supply program partners with food and services needed to distribute food directly to residents of these counties. Donations like the one that Slater Transfer & Storage facilitated go a long way to help Three Square help so many in their service area!

“Our team really appreciates the opportunity to provide this service. Anytime we are able to help our neighbors in need, our hearts are filled with great compassion," said Tierra Smith, Vice President of Operations. "We have developed a deeper understanding about hunger in our community and we are appreciative of our customers, who have given so generously to the cause.”

She added, “Slater Transfer & Storage is grateful to be part of the Move For Hunger network. It’s a great way to give a little something back to our community.”

Move For Hunger is grateful to have moving partners like Slater Transfer & Storage who look for opportunities to serve their local community and who often put doing good ahead of doing business. Thank you to Tierra and the whole Slater Transfer & Storage team for their generosity and relentless commitment to helping fight hunger in Nevada and nationwide!

In addition to the award, Slater Transfer & Storage – Las Vegas will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Slater Transfer & Storage – Las Vegas on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in Nevada!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
