Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Moving Ahead Services of Columbus is our Mover of the Month for November 2017!
Back in September, our events team began organizing food drives at five schools in Columbus, OH. Multi-location food drives are great, but they do present additional logistical challenges. Our network is so large that we are usually able to enlist multiple movers to help if necessary, but when one company volunteers to take on the whole event it makes it so much easier to coordinate. When we asked Moving Ahead Services to donate boxes and pick up the donations from all five schools, they didn't hesitate.
"It's easy for us to help," said Taylor Hope, General Manager of Moving Ahead Services of Columbus. "We have trucks that are able to pick up boxes from multiple locations in one run. We've never had a truck that was overfilled, although that would be a great problem to have!"
Although the truck wasn't filled, the students at the 5 participating schools did donate an amazing 600 lbs. of non-perishable food in total, which is enough to provide 500 meals! Moving Ahead Services of Columbus has been a member of the Move For Hunger network since 2015, but because of their involvement with this food drive, November was far and away their most successful month to date.
"We always try to be as active in the program as we can, and whenever you guys call us to help with a food drive we jump at the chance," Hope said. "It's a way for us to give back. Every community has needs and Columbus is no different. We always want to donate locally, and this is a fantastic way to help."
In addition to helping out with food drives, Moving Ahead Services is always asking their customers to donate their food when they move. According to Hope, being a member of the network has helped to build morale among their crew.
"The guys take it seriously. Sometimes it becomes a competition to see who can collect the most food," he said. "They like that all of the donations are going to benefit the community they live in."
It's also something that their clients appreciate.
"Every customer thinks Move For Hunger is an excellent idea, especially people who are moving long-distance," Hope said. "It's easier than taking the food with them, they want to start fresh."
By simply asking customers to share what they can spare, and assisting with food drives in the area, Moving Ahead Services has been able to deliver nearly 2,500 lbs. of food to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank over the past 3 years. That's the equivalent of more than 2,000 meals.
In addition to the award, Moving Ahead Services of Columbus will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging, lunch for their entire staff, compliments of Montway Auto Transport, and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.
