NorthStar Moving Rescues 2,300 LBS. of Food From the LA Marathon

April 7, 2020

Our friends from North Star Moving Company once again volunteered to rescue all of the unused food/beverages from the Los Angeles Marathon. This year's event took place on March 8, and the crew from North Star Moving recovered 2,300 pounds of energy bars, bagels, bananas and delivered it all to the Valley Food Bank.

“Each year, we are pleased to volunteer our team to be of service in such meaningful work; rescuing thousands of pounds of food from the finish line and delivering it to the Valley Food Bank for those that really need it,” said North Star Moving Co-Founder Laura McHolm.

North Star Moving has rescued nearly 17,500 lbs. of food/beverages from the race over the last four years and, since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2010, has delivered more than 75,000 lbs. of food -- enough to provide more than 62,000 meals -- to food banks in California.

Thank you to Laura and the entire crew at North Star Moving for your commitment to fighting hunger and reducing food waste in the Golden State!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
