NorthStar Moving Rescues 17,000+ LBS. of Food/Drinks for California Food Banks

April 15, 2019

NorthStar Moving has been working especially hard to reduce food waste in California over the past couple of weeks!

Thousands runners and walkers took part in the Los Angeles Marathon and United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Francisco and were greeted at the finish line with snacks and drinks to refuel. Unfortunately, at large events like this, any leftover food is usually just thrown away. At these races, however, the Los Angeles and San Francisco branches of NorthStar Moving were there to rescue any bottles of water, energy bars, bananas, etc. that were left behind by the athletes.

On March 24 at the Los Angeles Marathon, NorthStar’s LA branch rescued nearly 2,800 lbs. of food and water, and delivered it all to the Valley Food Bank. At the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon, which took place on April 7, the San Francisco crew rescued 14,950 lbs. of food and water and delivered it to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

“We are pleased to volunteer our team to be of service in such meaningful work; rescuing thousands of pounds of food from the finish line and delivering it to those that really need it,”said NorthStar Moving's Co-Founder, Laura McHolm.

More than 4.5 million Californians face hunger each day, including 1 in 6 children. Thank you to everyone at NorthStar Moving for your commitment to helping your neighbors in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
