Nike Holds a Season of Giving Food Drive to Fight Hunger in Oregon

February 13, 2019

Employees at Nike's world headquarters recently organized a food drive to help fight hunger in Oregon during the holiday season.

From December 3-19, Nike's team members were encouraged to bring in donations of canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, cereal, and other non-perishable items to lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need. We connected Nike with our friends from Chipman Relocation & Logistics who, in addition to donating boxes for the event, also decided to hold a food drive of their own! Together, they collected 315 lbs. of food, which is enough to provide 262 meals!

"At NIKE, Inc., community has been at the core of who we are and what we do," said Tanya Mariottini, Nike's Director of Talent Mobility. "Leveraging our partnership with Move For Hunger, our HR Total Rewards organization participated in the Season of Giving food drive to make an impact in our local community."

Chipman Relocation & Logistics delivered all of the donations to the Oregon Food Bank, which distributes food through a statewide network of 21 regional food banks and 1,200 food assistance sites.

More than 582,000 people in Oregon are food insecure, including 1 in 8 children. Thank you to everyone from Nike and Chipman Relocation & Logistics for making time to make a difference.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
