National Van Lines Cans Their COO!

December 14, 2018

National Van Lines' COO Tim Helenthal has always been one of our biggest advocates. He is one of Team Move For Hunger's all-time leading fundraisers and, under his leadership, National Van Lines agents have delivered nearly 31,000 lbs. of food this year, alone. So he shouldn't have been surprised when his employees decided to CAN him last month!

NationalVanLinesCanTheCeo-COO2018 (13).jpgFrom November 26-December 3, National Van Lines hosted a Can The CEO food drive at their corporate office in Broadview, IL. One of our Featured Campaigns, Can the CEO is a great team building activity that helps raise awareness about hunger while also empowering your team to take action in a fun way. The idea is that you and your coworkers attempt to fill your boss' office with so many non-perishable food items that he/she won't even be able to get inside it!

We are happy to report that National Van Lines was up to the task! Tim's desk was completely covered with non-perishables like canned fruits and veggies, tuna, and more. A grand total of 180 pounds of food was collected, which is enough to provide 150 meals for food insecure families in their community.

"I frequently tell National Van Lines employees, 'My door is always open,'" Tim said, "and they took me at my word—literally. Navigating the ever-increasing stacks of cans to reach my desk became a challenge as employees contributed more and more items. I couldn't be more proud of our team for their generosity."

After the food drive ended, the staff formed a fire-brigade-style line to load all of the food into a moving van. National Van Lines then delivered the donations to The Salvation Army Oakbrook Terrace, hosted at the Christ Church of Oak Brook, where it will be distributed to their neighbors in need.

There are more than 1.4 million people in Illinois who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. Thank you so much to Tim and everyone at National Van Lines for your continued support of our fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
