National Van Lines Delivers a Truckload of Supplies to Those Affected by Hurricane Florence

October 3, 2018

There is no turning your back on those in need. Hurricane Florence resulted in upwards of $18 billion dollars in economic and property damage. Knowing this, National Van Lines teamed up with Illinois movers and other local businesses to collect donations for those affected by the storm.

Arlington Heights’ CDS-Moving, Deerfield’s convenience store Rmarts, and a National Van Lines agent from Batavia; Four Generations – Relocations Experts helped in the effort along with the Broadview Fire Department. CDS-Moving brought donation boxes to the site and Rmarts contributed 40 cases of bottled of water.

One of National Van Lines' top drivers, Ed Johnson, drove a 53-foot trailer 900+ miles to help those in New Bern, NC. It was a long trip, but it was worth it to aid those misplaced by Florence.

“We couldn’t witness the devastation that struck Virginia and the Carolinas without taking swift action in the best way we know how,” said Tim Helenthal, National Van Lines President & COO.  “Realizing time is of the essence, we put out a call to our employees to donate water, food and other provisions and get those supplies on the road ASAP.”

This isn’t the first time National Van Lines felt it fit to help out after a natural disaster. In 2017, they partnered with the Village of Broadview to provide water and various supplies to Houston first responders of Hurricane Harvey.

A heartfelt thank you goes to National Van Lines, CDS-Moving, Rmarts, Four Generations – Relocations Experts, and the Broadview Fire Department for their time and work toward aiding those affected by Hurricane Florence.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
