NASMM Collects 7,100 LBS. of Food

September 10, 2019

For the sixth consecutive year, our partners from the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) organized their 100 Can Challenge food drive. From June 1-July 31, members of NASMM were asked to collect 100 non-perishable food items to help fight summer hunger in the communities they serve. Twenty-four companies accepted the challenge this year, and together they collected 7,119 lbs. of food, a new record!

NASMM100CanChallengeFoodDrive2019_OrganizeHaven (3).jpegThe 100 Can Challenge is the perfect food drive for an organization like NASMM for several reasons. First, although 100 seems like a large number, it’s actually relatively easy goal to reach. Think about it: if you have 10 employees, everyone only has to donate to cans! That makes it ideal for a business or company holding their first food drive. Even though NASMM has been organizing this event for the better part of a decade, there are always members who are participating for the first time. Finally, even though 100 items is a modest goal, it still makes a huge impact. One hundred cans of soup, for example, would provide approximately 80 meals!

Of course, there are longtime members of NASMM who set their sights much higher and they are the reason why this year’s food drive was the most successful to date. Life Transitions in Fishers, Indiana pledged to donate 2,000 lbs. of food this year. Not only did they reach that mark, they crushed it by collecting 2,500 lbs. of non-perishables, which was the most food ever collected by a NASMM member in a single food drive! Let’s Move of Fulton, Maryland wasn’t far behind with 1,480 lbs. of food — they’ve donated nearly 3,500 lbs. over the past 2 years combined! Golden Bridges in Liberty, Illinois was another standout, as they brought in 1,000 lbs. of food, which was nearly 300 lbs. more than they collected in 2018!

Although most of the NASMM members delivered the donations themselves, we have to acknowledge the help we received from two moving companies in our network who graciously agreed to pick up from 2 locations that needed assistance. Thank you to Frank & Sons Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, and to 123 Moving & Storage for answering the call!

Together, NASMM provided nearly 6,000 meals for their neighbors in need. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s food drive!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
