MSS Takes Part in the Camp Out For Hunger Food Drive

February 4, 2020

Our partners from Movers Speciality Services took part in one of Philadelphia's biggest food drives of 2019!

For the past 22 years, 93.3 WMMR has organized Camp Out for Hunger, a massive days-long event that collects non-perishable food for Philabundance. According to MSS, "it’s the largest single-location food drive in the country!" MSS is a longtime supporter of our fight against hunger, so it's not a surprise to us that they decided to hold a food drive to join this effort!

Back in March, MSS organized a March Madness Knock Out Tournament that raised $200 and brought in 100 lbs. of food! This time, the team competed in a Cornhole or Baggo (the name of the game is the subject of much debate amoung the MSS staff) Tournament. As an added incentive, anyone who donated a non-perishable food item received a chance to win a 1/2 day off AND the privilege of being able to drop off the donations at Xfinity Live!

A grand total of 735 lbs. of food was donated, which provided more than 600 meals to their neighbors in need!

"Move For Hunger is the philanthropic face of our industry and they deserve all the help we can muster," said Aurora Hughes of MSS. "As suppliers who don’t fit into the donation model, we’re always looking for opportunities to do our part, whether through financial support or by engaging our community through food drives."

More than 683,000 people in the greater Philadelphia area are food insecure, including 1 in 8 children. Thank you to everyone at MSS for doing your part to help during the holiday season!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
