Moving Ahead Services Rescues Nearly 3 Tons of Food From the Cleveland Marathon

May 30, 2019

On May 19, Moving Ahead Services rescued more than 5,300 lbs. of oranges, bananas, and other snacks from the Cleveland Marathon. Everything was delivered to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Over the past 2 years, Moving Ahead Services has recovered nearly 12,500 lbs. of food/beverages from this race, alone!

About 40% of all food grown, processed and transported in the United States will go to waste this year. It’s unconscionable that we could be wasting so much food, especially when 40 million Americans are facing hunger. That's why food rescues like this are so important. According to The National Resource Defense Council, if we were able to rescue just 15% of the food we waste each year, we’d save enough to feed more than half of the American struggling with food insecurity.

More than 1.6 million people in Ohio, including 1 in 5 children, face hunger every day. Thank you to Jeff Collins, Adam Gurwell, and the rest of the team from Moving Ahead Services for helping out again this year!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
