Moving Ahead Services and Move For Hunger Announce Partnership

January 23, 2019

CLEVELAND, OH – Moving Ahead Services and Move For Hunger today announced a partnership that will help to provide much-needed assistance to food banks across the United States. As a partner, Moving Ahead Services, a Stevens Worldwide Van Lines agent, will support Move For Hunger’s efforts to reduce food waste and fight hunger nationwide; to date, the non-profit’s network of relocation professionals has collected and delivered more than 12.6 million pounds of food – providing more than 10.5 million meals – to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada.

When people move, they often throw out a good deal of “stuff.”  Unfortunately, much of this stuff is food that could be delivered to a family in need rather than just left behind. Moving Ahead Services volunteers to collect those food items from their customers and delivers them directly to the local food banks. The service is free to customers and turns every move into an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate, simply by donating the cans and non-perishables on moving day.

“More than 41 million Americans are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children. Meanwhile, we are wasting 40% of the food we produce every year,” explains Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “Moving Ahead Services recognizes the urgency of the problem and is committed to taking action. We are proud to call them our partners.”

“Move For Hunger has been a part of our daily operations since 2015,” said Jeff Collins, Owner of Moving Ahead Services. “It’s something that is included in every single job, every new hire training packet, and every monthly recap. We have been able to rescue food from our customers, aid corporate organizations and large events in food collection efforts, and really make an impact in the communities we serve.”

Through the support of partners like Moving Ahead Services, Move For Hunger can continue to help the more than 41 million Americans who are struggling to find their next meal.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
