Mover Milestone | Carolina Moving & Storage Has Provided 47,000 Meals to Children in Need

June 25, 2018

BEAUFORT, SC Carolina Moving & Storage, a Wheaton agent, has been recognized for delivering 57,000 pounds of food – enough to provide 47,000 meals – to the Lowcountry Food Bank in Yemassee.

People tend to throw a lot of “stuff” away when they move, including perfectly good food. As part of Move For Hunger’s national network of relocation professionals, Carolina Moving & Storage provides their customers with the opportunity to donate unopened, non-perishable food during the moving process and volunteers to deliver the donations to the food bank, free of charge.

Carolina Moving & Storage has also assisted with the Lowcountry Food Bank’s “Backpack Buddies” program. Once a month, Carolina Moving & Storage picks up thousands of backpacks filled with non-perishable food and delivers them to seven different schools in the area. On Fridays, the backpacks are distributed to food insecure students whose families struggle to replace the meals the children receive at school during the week.

“The work that Carolina Moving & Storage is doing to fight childhood hunger in the communities they serve is inspiring,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “We are so grateful for their support.”

“We have been a member of the Move for Hunger program since 2009, but we are always looking for additional ways to fight hunger in our community,” said Susan Neal, Vice President of Carolina Moving & Storage. “Our guys just love delivering the food and look forward to it each month. This program is a wonderful way to help the thousands of food insecure children right here in our small community.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
