Mover Milestone | AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage Has Delivered 88,000 Meals to Local Food Bank

May 30, 2018

TALLAHASSEE, FLAMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage has been recognized by Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization, for delivering 106,000 pounds of food – enough to provide 88,000 meals – to America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

People tend to throw a lot of “stuff” away when they move, including perfectly good food. As part of Move For Hunger’s national network of relocation professionals, AMWAT provides their customers with the opportunity to donate unopened, non-perishable food during the moving process and volunteers to deliver the donations to the food bank, free of charge. For the past four years, AMWAT has also hosted a Fill-A-Truck food drive to help fight hunger during the summer months. This year’s event was held on May 10 and more than 5,500 lbs. of food was donated.

“AMWAT was one of the founding members of the Move For Hunger network,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “They have been helping us fight hunger in Florida for almost 9 years and have never wavered in their support. We are so proud to call them our partners.”

“There is so much food that goes to waste. No one in our country should be going hungry,” said Gloria Pugh of AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage. “We are committed to bringing awareness to the staggering rate of food insecurity in the United States. Most importantly, we want to help fill the gap so families in need have access to food.”

There are more than 850 moving companies in Move For Hunger’s network, but AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage is one of just 17 to have delivered 100,000+ lbs. of food.

Move For Hunger is a non-profit organization that mobilizes the relocation industry to fight hunger and reduce food waste. In addition to collecting food from people who are moving to new homes, Move For Hunger helps companies and individuals across the United States and Canada organize successful food drives. To date, they have collected more than 10 million pounds of food. For more information, or to find out how you can host your own food drive, visit www.MoveForHunger.org.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
