Move For Hunger Receives Grant to Prevent Food Waste in Seattle

September 12, 2019

We are very excited to announce that Move For Hunger has received a $10,000 Seattle Public Utilities Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant to expand our community-initiated and led waste prevention projects in the Emerald City.

Although Move For Hunger already has a significant presence in Seattle, this generous grant will allow us to rescue more food for local families in need. Over the next year, we will provide one of our local moving partners with a truck wrap, which will raise awareness about food waste & hunger in Seattle and encourage residents to donate their food when they move. We will also utilize the funding to engage with the Washington Multi-Family Housing Association and to continue to recruit moving companies, apartment communities, and partners in the region.

More than 612,000 people in the greater Seattle area face hunger each day, including 1 in 6 children. Meanwhile, more than 40% of the food in the United States each year is lost or wasted. Thank you to the city of Seattle for recognizing the urgency of this crisis, for promoting sustainability, and for supporting our food rescue programs!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
