Move For Hunger & Altair Global Renew Partnership

February 4, 2020

RED BANK, NJ – Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization, and Altair Global, the only global mobility experience management company, today announced that they have renewed a partnership that will reduce food waste and fight hunger nationwide.

People throw away a lot of things when they move, including perfectly good food. Move For Hunger’s network of more than 1,000 moving companies, more than 1,500 multi-family apartment communities, and many of the world’s leading relocation management companies, volunteers to collect this unopened, non-perishable food and delivers it to their local food banks. To date, the Move For Hunger network has collected and delivered more than 16.3 million pounds of food – providing nearly 13.5 million meals – to food banks and pantries across the United States and Canada.

As partners, Altair Global has supported Move For Hunger’s programs and integrated Move For Hunger’s model into their relocation policies.

“More than 40 million Americans face hunger every day, but we’re wasting 40% of our food,” explains Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger. “Our partnership with Altair Global allows us to address both problems at scale. Since 2012, Altair’s supplier network has collected more than 1.3 million lbs. of food, which is enough to provide more than 1 million meals. We are proud of what we have already accomplished together, and I feel the best is yet to come.”

"Partnering with Move For Hunger speaks to two beliefs that are at the core of Altair Global’s mentality: dedication to helping the community, and continuously striving to be a sustainable organization,” said Chad Sterling, chief executive officer at Altair Global. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with Move For Hunger into 2020 and are looking forward to how much we can accomplish together in this next year.”

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
