We Raised $28,000 at the Rose City Truck Pull

September 20, 2019

We were in Portland on Thursday, September 12 for the first-ever Rose City Truck Pull, hosted by the Portland Relocation Council and presented by Chipman Relocation & Logistics. More than 200 people attended the event, which was held at Golden Valley Brewery, and helped us raise $28,040 to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs!

RoseCityTruckPull2019 (73).jpgThere are more than 510,000 people in Oregon who are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. The leaders of the Portland Relocation Council, including the Chair of our Corporate Action Network, Tanya Mariottini, and Eric White of Chipman Relocation, are passionate about Move For Hunger’s mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger. They all did an incredible job of raising awareness about the issues and inspiring others to sign up for the Truck Pull to support the cause.

A total of 13 teams put themselves to the test and the competition had everyone on the edge of their seats! The team from Suddath Relocation seemed like a heavy favorite heading into the event, but it ended up being a lot closer than anyone expected! Although Suddath did walk away with the gold medal, they only bested the runner-up by .06 of a second!

The competition for best team name was just as close as the truck pull times, with hysterical handles like ‘I Pull Big Trucks & I Cannot Lie’, ‘Just Pull It’, and ‘The Suite Sounds of Victory,’ among others. All of the participants were treated to Nike store passes as a small thank you for for their generosity.

RoseCityTruckPull2019 (296).jpgAlthough Move For Hunger has provided more than 12.7 million meals to people facing hunger since 2009, we can’t continue organize food drives, coordinate food rescues, or expand our network without the support we receive from our partners and individuals donors.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
