More Than $14,500 Raised at the First Annual Tampa Truck Pull

December 10, 2019

It was a perfect sunny day for the first-ever Tampa Truck Pull on Saturday, December 7. More than 150 people joined the teams, sponsors, and vendors at Tampa Joe’s to support this event, hosted by First Class Moving Systems. We are thrilled to announce that more than $14,500 was raised to support our hunger relief and food rescue program. The funds raised at this event will provide 35,000 meals to people facing hunger in Florida and across the U.S.

TampaTruckPull2019 (6).jpgNine teams competed to see who would win the bragging rights of being the fastest team in Tampa! Team Ed’s Truck captured the first place prize with a time of approximately 18 seconds. There was a tie for second place that resulted in a pull off; Team Tampa ultimately won second place, and Los Toros Locos finished third. Team Pure Romance rocked their best pink pigtails, socks, and tutus. First Class Moving System provided cash prizes to the first and second place teams, and both Team Ed’s Truck and Team Tampa generously donated their cash prizes to Move For Hunger!

This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors! Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
